Honestly, I used to think that getting married would change me, that suddenly a raging cookaholic who was buried deep inside me would wake up and make her debut. I’d create ravishing dinners for Jake every night. I’d throw little get-togethers and serve hors d’ouervres that would make Gordon Ramsay proud. And let’s not even get into desserts! Ok, let’s just say I envisioned lots of them going on Pinterest…
Sadly though, after a little over 2 years of marriage and much to Jake’s my disappointment, I’ve realized that nothing could be further from the truth. There is no cookaholic buried inside me. There isn’t even a tiny chef, or morsel of kitchen sense. When it comes to food, I’m reeeeally good at eating it. And that’s about it.
Take, for example, the time Jake told me I was using “the wrong tool for the job.” Jake is big into tools. He always has been. (You should see how perfectly arranged they are in his big tool chest, meticulously lined up. He’s more organized than I am. Kind of embarrassing. But I digress.) He’s my handyman. He fixes things and keeps the cars running and kills the spiders. Yep, he does it all. But when I was cutting some apples in the kitchen and he told me I was using the wrong tool for the job, I rolled my eyes. What, did he want me to go get a hammer from his chest and smash it?
Well, not exactly. It turns out there’s a reason some knives have serrated edges and some knives have smooth edges… BAD. I know. But I’ve since learned my lesson, and which knife is the right tool for cutting fruit. I’ve also finally come to accept the fact that my cooking skills will probably never be as good as mom’s. It’s ok, though. Because it means that whenever I do attempt to make us dinner, Jake is usually right there beside me, and we do it together. Honestly, I wouldn’t really have it any other way.
Although I will say, I think Jake might regret introducing me to that term. I mean, when I had to explain to him that I need a new straightener because my big two-inch one is too thick to straighten my bangs, I just told him it was the wrong tool for the job ;)
Happy Monday!
adorably cute post. :)
