Thanksgiving Point Wedding Portraits: Heather + Bill

Sometimes you meet a couple that doesn’t need words to describe their love. It is evident in every smile, every look, every touch. Bill and Heather are such a couple. We met on a sweltering, sunny evening, and from the moment we started, their joy was palpable, bubbling over like a fresh poured glass of champagne. Bill loves Heather. And Heather loves Bill. It’s really as simple as that. And it’s people like these two that make me feel so blessed to be a photographer.

We began their session with a First Look. And you all know how I feel about First Looks ;)

After a few moments to themselves, we continued around the gorgeous Thanksgiving Point grounds to take more pictures!

Love this :)

Oh Heather, you make one elegant bride!!

Bill couldn’t help but smile while he looked at his gorgeous wife-to-be :)

The were truly nothing but smiles and laughter. SO sweet…

Lace dressed bride, gray suited groom, and a parasol? LOVE.

Workin’ it!

I’ll finish up with three of my favorites :)

Congrats Heather and Bill! So excited for the life you guys are starting together :)

And the winners of a Yankee Candle are….. EMILY and RONI!!!!! Yes, I’m picking two because, as I mentioned on Facebook, Friday was crazy hectic and I totally ran out of time to blog. So two winners for making everyone wait over the weekend :) Congrats Emily and Roni! Email me your address and I’ll get your yummy Fall scents in the mail!!

These shots of Heather and Bill are breathtaking! You’ve definitely captured the true essence of who they are and what happiness they’ll be bringing equally into their marriage! I’m in awe! You’re quite a photographer!

Wedding Wednesday: The First Impression

No, I’m not talking about the first impression you had of your fiance. (Although those usually make for pretty good stories!) I’m talking about the first impression your guests will have of your wedding. And it comes way before your wedding actually happens. I’m talking about the invitations!

Invitations are the first thing your guests see to give them an idea of what your wedding celebration will be like. Which means it’s important to have an invitation that truly reflects not only the personalities of you and your fiance, but also the personality of your wedding! So whether you’re designing them yourself or having them custom designed, here are a few things that really contribute to the feel of the invitation:

  • Colors– This is probably the most obvious, and I talk all about choosing your wedding colors here. So I won’t go into much detail for this one, but remember to keep accent colors in mind, and use enough contrast so that the different invitation elements don’t all blend together!
  • Fonts– The fonts you choose play a HUGE role in what kind of an impression your invitation will give, maybe even more-so than the colors. (Here is where my graphic design background comes in and geeks out on you.) Without getting into a deep conversation about all things typography (I LOVE typography, in case you were wondering), just take notice of how different fonts express different feelings and styles. If you’re having a very formal wedding, you’re probably going to want to stay away from block letters. And vice versa, if you’re having more of a casual, simple affair, using an ornate script probably isn’t the best way to go. Even if they are really great fonts, if they don’t match anything else going in your wedding, it’s best to try and find something better suited! I could also get into fonts to stay away from (cough*zapfino*cough), but I’ll leave it at this suggestion: If you’re designing your own invites, try to steer away from fonts that already come with your computer. If you’re having them created for you, your designer should already know better.
  • Paper Type– Thick? Textured? Blush colored? Shimmery? Matte? Don’t think you’re stuck with just a plain card-stock! There are lots of pretty and fun paper choices that can give your invitations a unique spin. One tip, though. If you’re using paper that isn’t white, definitely do a test print (if you’re making them yourself) or request a sample (if they’re being done for you), because colors can appear different on paper that’s not white.
  • Details and Accents– These are always my favorite part about invitations :) If you can incorporate a little hint of what’s to come, it’s that much more exciting to get an invitation! Do you have a country theme? Tie a twine bow around it. Keeping it classy? Using a calligrapher to address the envelopes will definitely give that feeling. Want it simple and clean? Leave lots of white space but include a picture of the two of you for personalization. Using feathers as a decoration in your wedding? Add a feather graphic into the overall design. Going for elegance? Having letterpress invitations can be a very sophisticated touch. Do you love lace? Add in lace lining to your envelopes. Those are just a few really random ideas lol. The possibilities are endless! But the best kind of invitations, in my opinion, are the ones that let your personalities shine :)

Here are a few charming invites to pique your creativity. Notice how they all have a very different yet very definite vibe! Don’t you feel like you know what the wedding is all about, just from the invite? Love that.

I’m a big fan of this design by Bella Figura. Clean with lots of white space, but the fonts and layout are so fun!

How great are those little wooden buttons?! This design by Three Little Words definitely tells you what this wedding will be like.

This cute little invite by Hello Lucky  is simple yet full of personality.

Pica Press did an excellent job creating this invite. Who’s ready for a BBQ now!?

Another one by Three Little Words. I love the playful yet elegant feeling of this suite.

Lastly here’s a fun one by Grapevine Paperie. Perfect for an ocean themed wedding, don’t you think?

Happy Wednesday!

Bangs and Yankees

“Jake, I did something…”

I had heard him come up the stairs and into our room. I was in the bathroom, and turned my back to him. “Oh really?” he responded.” I did something, too!” Turns out his “something” was buying a shredder attachment for our Kitchenaid so that he could make homemade hash browns with it. (Ummm, OK?!? He’s a keeper, folks.) I glanced in the mirror at myself again, then down at the scissors and trashcan on the bathroom counter. My “something” was a bit more drastic…

“I gave myself bangs.”

As in, legit straight-across-the-forehead bangs. I’d wanted to try this for a while, considering I’ve had the same hairstyle for like the last, oh I don’t know… TEN YEARS. It was time to change things up. Well, something possessed me last week, and I just went for it. Which could have been disastrous. Fortunately, I turned around to show Jake, and he genuinely smiled. “I like them.” And with that I was happy as a clam. (Sidenote- where did that saying even come from? Are clams really happy? End sidenote.)

But of course, I had to get some approval from the interwebs as well. So instagrammed it. And fortunately, most of you guys seem to like them, too. Thanks everyone, for approving of my bangs :)

(P.S. Don’t worry, I totally went and got them professionally trimmed the next day. Ha.)

And with that, on an utterly and completely unrelated tangent, I feel like it’s time for another giveaway!!

The weather this year has just been crazy, and here in Park City we are already starting to see a few leaves changing and signs of Fall coming. While some might be soaking up the last sun rays and squeezing summer for all she’s worth, I’m over it. I LOVE FALL!!! Woohoo!! Scraves and pumpkin spice lattes, crunchy leaves and cardigans… Oh yes, I am ready for Fall. One thing that helps get me pumped are Yankee Candles, like Pomegranate Cider and Spiced Pumpkin. Deeelish.

So I’m going to send one lucky commenter a Yankee Candle! To win, just leave a comment below telling me what scent you would want, and I’ll randomly choose a winner from the comments on Friday. While I recommend any of the Fall Favorites, you can choose any scent you’d like! I mean, you never go wrong with Clean Cotton :) So there you have it! What scent do you want to ring in the Fall with? Ready… GO!

Pomegranate cider sounds amazing, I have to think that would make the onset of cold weather a little more palatable :) Love the bangs, wish I could make my hair do that!

Music Monday

I’m currently sitting at the LAX airport to board my flight home after a very full weekend of shooting in Santa Barbara. I didn’t wake up early enough to blog before leaving for the airport (mornings are not my strong suit), and then I was upset at myself because I didn’t want to leave you guys without a little music for your week! I even got on the bus for the airport and found out they had wifi, which was extremely exciting, until I remembered my laptop was in my bag under the bus. Slight downer. Fortunately, though, LAX is awesome and has free wifi. Score. (If it hadn’t been free, you might not have gotten this post because, let’s face it, my dad’s Jewish blood runs very strongly in my veins and I would have had a difficult time paying for something that is normally free…. So yeah. This post brought to you by LAX’s free internet access!)

My friend Chris introduced me to the rad couple Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, the music behind Shovels & Rope. You might know them from their song Birmingham, which is great, too. But this is one of my favorites of theirs. The best part comes 3 minutes in… Cary Ann’s voice is so rich and raw. Love it. Hope it brightens your week! Enjoy “The Thread.”

And here is a little sneak peek at a part of the shoot I was doing this weekend. Something a little different from weddings… I’ll share more soon!

Happy Monday :)

Park City Anytime: (Maternity) Tracy + Jay

Tracy and Jay are expecting their first little one in just a few months, and I had the pleasure of capturing this exciting time in their lives!  From the first cheerful email I got from Tracy, I knew this shoot would be a blast. Funny story, though… These two came up to Park City to shoot in a location that I had scouted out for them. When we arrived, though, there were tents and kids. EVERYWHERE. Apparently there was some kind of camp going on. I had no idea things like that even happened where I had scouted. Needless to say, I was mortified.

Fortunately for me, though, Jay and Tracy are just awesome, and totally laughed about it. We had to walk a little deeper into the trail than I had anticipated, but they were such great sports! And to be honest, I think we ended up getting better pictures because of it :) Enjoy some of my favorites of these Tracy and Jay!

Tracy, you are one glowing mama-to-be!

Seriously Tracy, so beautiful…

Jay stepped in for a few, and I loved the way he made Tracy laugh :)

Favorite right here!

Tracy changed into a coral top, which I thought was a perfect color. I mean really, how lovely does she look in these?

Lovelovelove this.

Jay, I’m pretty sure you’re going to make a great dad!

Yes, I might have gotten a little overly excited at this gorgeous light…

Oh you guys, so cute together!

I’ll finish up with this adorableness.

Happy Friday!
