The Evolution of a (Semi) Date Night

Sent Feb 2, 2011 12:56p: Oh hey could you take the steak out of the freezer? I forgot to this morning.
Received Feb 2, 2011 1:17p: I am making something else but do you know where our vegetable oil is?

It started out like any other Wednesday, nothing spectacular about it. Jake was at home enjoying his day off (Wednesdays are his Saturdays). I was at work and my mind was running a million miles an hour with all the things that needed to get done (Wednesdays are my crazy day of the week). Until I remembered I had left the steak in the freezer. Hence the text above that I sent Jake. A simple request, really. But his response caught me off guard. Actually, scratch that. It completely blindsided me. In a good way. (Side note- if you’ve followed my blog at all, you know that I love food. But you also know that I can’t cook to save my life. Let me put it this way: it’s an accomplishment if we don’t have breakfast for dinner.)  So this was a big deal. Jake was cooking dinner for me. Forget the fact that he couldn’t find the vegetable oil. He was cooking. Which meant I didn’t have to. Yep, he had me at “making something else.”

When I stopped at the grocery store on the way home, the Redbox machine by the checkout stared me in the face, daring me to ignore it. Naturally, the wheels in my head started turning. Dinner… plus a movie…equals a date! I was pretty sure I had just come up with a brilliant idea, but I decided to check with Jake for good measure.

Sent Feb 2, 2011 4:18p: Should I get a movie from redbox to watch tonight?
Sent Feb 2, 2011 4:20p: ?????
Sent Feb 2, 2011 4:22p: Too late I'm doing it.

There might not have been candles at dinner. We might not have been all dressed up. And Jake might have fallen asleep during the first 5 minutes of the movie. But it was perfect. An evening together enjoying each other’s company and just being. Us. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I love this:)

Provo Anytime: Quincy (1 Year Old)

You may remember Quincy from his family’s mini session last fall. Well, this little cutie pie just turned one. And yes, I still want to gobble him up. Like pie. Or cake. You know, birthday cake. Because it’s his birthday. (Bad joke.) Anyway. I had such a great time on this shoot and I think Quincy did too, at least for most of it ; ) Thank you, Eric and Macy, for allowing me to capture this part of your son’s life! I can’t wait to see how much he grows this next year : )

The shoot didn’t start exactly as we had hoped. He was only happy for about .5 seconds…

No, he was not thrilled.

Fortunately, mom stepped in and saved the day!

Love. This.

A sippy cup and dad are all Quincy needs : )

Macy brought such cute options for Quincy to wear, so a quick outfit change and we were back at it.

Just look at those baby blues!

He quickly got bored with the chair, so Eric brought him to the window for some entertainment.

And this picture right here? Makes me die. Of laughter. I’m pretty sure this is his “Get that camera out of my face!” look.

Quincy makes the best faces.

Haha.

Now for my favorite part of the shoot. CAKE.

He was a little unsure of it at first…

And disaster struck. He decided he didn’t like it.

That is, until mom started feeding him.

Because really, what’s not to love about cake?

Then he decided it wasn’t so bad after all.

He even offered to help clean up : )

Happy Birthday baby Quincy!

And a big thank you to Justin Hackworth for lending us his studio space!!

Alicia - February 3, 2011 - 12:18 pm

I LOVE THIS! I’m doing a 1 year old sesion in March hopefully with the cake and everything. She’s a doll and full of personality so I’m sure it will be fun.
Was wondering what lens did you use for this shoot?

Man, Quincy is such a handsome little man and you did such a great job at capturing his day! This is probably my favorite 1 year baby session.

Justin Hackworth - February 3, 2011 - 1:25 pm

These are so FUN. I love the shot that has just the foot with cake on it an the cake on the ground. Also, the color is perfect in these. Well done.

Carissa - February 3, 2011 - 4:48 pm

@Alicia Aww thanks! Yes, kids are so fun : ) I used my 24-70mm f/2.8L. He was too fast for me to use my 50mm lol. Good luck with your shoot!

@Justin Wow. Thank you SO much! That really means a lot coming from you…

The Thirty-Something Bride - February 7, 2011 - 10:19 am

This ALMOST makes me what to have a kid. Almost.

Sundance Film Festival 2011

I had a plan. A plan to take pictures, and a lot of them. This is the first time I’ve been home for Sundance since I left for college. And I wanted to document it like the Sartorialist documents fashion. Unfortunately, somewhere in between the lines of balancing work and play and food and sleep, I found myself at the end of a crazy week and realized that I had only taken my camera out once. ONCE. And not for very long, either. Dang it.

When I sat down last month and made my goals for this coming year, one of them was to shoot more for myself. Opportunity number one? Failed miserably. As I reviewed the few photos I did take, I decided right then and there never to do that again. Because I regret not taking more pictures. I regret being paranoid about bringing my camera with me.  And life is far too short for those kind of regrets.

So it’s February 1st, and I’m starting over. More shooting for myself. No regrets.

My cousin Emily came into to town for the festival, and one afternoon we hopped on a bus (because trying to drive is pointless) and headed up to Main Street.

Apparently musicians think Sundance is a chance to get their big break. I kid you not, there was a different band every couple stores. Some weren’t all that great, but others were pretty good!

After walking around for a shorter amount of time than I’d like to admit, we got hungry (we’re Fines- it’s in our blood). So we stopped into Java Cow’s Ice Cream and Coffee Shop for a snack. I got a bagel and a latte. Emily got a lovely scoop of ice cream.

And quiche?? Yes, that is quiche. Quiche and ice cream. Haha. Love you Emmy!

You were fun, Sundance. I’ll see you next year, camera in hand.

Salt Lake City Temple Wedding: Amber + Trent

Recently I had the distinct honor of second shooting for Dustin Izatt. I interned with him last fall and I’ve assisted him before, but this was the first time I’d shot a wedding with him. And it was so much fun!  I feel like I always learn something when I am second shooter. Not only tips from the main shooter, but also by pushing myself to think outside the box. Instead of just shooting over the first shooter’s shoulder, trying to find new angles, and finding creative ways to frame shots differently. I always come away with a refreshed mind and vision. So thank you, Dustin, for allowing me to learn from you and shoot with you! And thank you, Amber and Trent, for allowing me to be a part of your amazing day! It was truly a beautiful celebration of your love.

(For any unfamiliar with LDS weddings, the photographers are not allowed into the temple for the ceremony. The first shots we get are the newly married bride and groom coming out of the temple to their friends and family!)

After greeting everyone and getting some family pictures, we took a few bridal portraits of Amber.

And really, how beautiful is she?!

This might be my favorite shot from the entire day. Amber looks simply divine.

After Amber’s bridals, we headed into the Joseph Smith Memorial Building for a fabulous luncheon.

And the dessert?? Just LOOK at it!!

Sooo gooooood. Lol.

After the delicious food and heartwarming speeches, the couple braved the cold so we could get some pictures before the light faded.

Thank you, Trent, for serving our country and protecting our freedom!!!

Rawr.

I think this one sums up their relationship nicely.

Congratulations again you two!!! I wish you nothing but love and happiness : )

David Terry - January 29, 2011 - 9:52 am

Beautiful pictures, all of them. But that one of the bride in front of the curtains … WOW. LOVE it!

Wendy Carter - January 29, 2011 - 10:24 am

Beautiful work Carissa! Love the processing, so crisp and clean!

Carissa - January 29, 2011 - 7:18 pm

Thanks so much you guys : )

The Thirty-Something Bride - January 31, 2011 - 3:12 pm

Oh my goodness golly. SO pretty.

Contest Updates!

Alright brides. It’s come to my attention that there has been a little confusion about the contest. So I’m here to clear up any misunderstandings, and announce a few updates. Updates that will give more brides an opportunity to win. Hollaaa! Read on : )

First, you do NOT have to be in your thirties to enter this contest! I know that some people thought it was only for bride’s in their thirties because that’s what Louise’s blog is called. The Thirty-Something Bride. But here’s the thing. SHE is the thirty-something bride. She didn’t get married until she was in her thirties, and she started the blog about herself and her wedding. So she titled it after herself, a bride in her thirties. Make sense? That being said, it doesn’t matter how young or old you are! Anyone is welcome to enter : )

Second, if there are any questions that you would rather not answer, that’s fine! You can opt out of any of them. Just remember that it’s all about creative answers! Me personally? I like to laugh. If you can make me laugh, I’ll probably like your entry. (Then again, one entry almost made me cry (happy tears, of course), and I loved that one too…. )

Third, we are extending the deadline for entries to FEBRUARY 6th!!! One more week to set your date, or for him to propose ; ) Haha.

Fourth, we are now opening up the contest to 2012 WEDDINGS!!! So it doesn’t matter if you’re getting married this year or next. As long as you’ve got your date set, you can enter. Doesn’t get much better than that : )

So head over to The Thirty-Something Bride blog and enter away for free wedding photography!

And because every post is better with a picture, here’s Zuka and Akiva. They were quite jealous that Frisky had already made his debut on my new blog. But they agreed to forgive me if I posted a nice headshot.

Zuka, a.k.a Batdog (Insert Batman theme song here.)

And Kiva. She thought the snow added to her fabulousness.

Happy almost weekend!

Emily Drudge - January 27, 2011 - 3:02 pm

I would totally do this contest- but i doubt i’d win twice… boo. :)

Carissa - January 27, 2011 - 5:53 pm

Emily!!! All I have to say is, you never know ; )

Kali Judkins - January 27, 2011 - 9:59 pm

If only we had a date set! ;)

Carissa - January 28, 2011 - 9:50 am

Seriously Kali!! Tell Chad about this contest and see if he gets the hint… Haha ; )
